Sultan's Palace & Water Castle
The royal palace complex and the seat of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. It was founded in 1755 by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I after the Mataram Sultanate was divided by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) into the Surakarta Sunanate and the Yogyakarta Sultanate.
The Water Castle is a separate complex located just a short walk southwest of the Kraton. It was the Sultan's exclusive pleasure garden and retreat.
